Here are my five tips to help you improve your speed during your retouching process.
1. Use Actions and Presets: If you want to save time plus create consistency, then you should be working with actions. I have actions for dodge, burn, sharpening, blemish correction, color correction presets, frequency separation, and many more. When I open a photo, I hit one button that runs all of the actions that I need for my retouching process.
2. Invest in a drawing pad: Depending on how in depth you retouch, you may find yourself losing time with a clunky mouse. There is a learning curve to using a drawing pad, but once you get the hang of it, then you will never go back. With a drawing tablet you can make better selections, create more natural brush strokes, and cause less strain on your hand because it is more ergonomic. You can even get away with the smallest basic tablet for retouching. Check out my storefront to see which one’s by Wacom that I would recommend. FIND THESE ITEMS ON AMAZON!
3. HIGH SPEED MEMORY!: Take it from me, I already made the mistake for you. You will only be as fast as your hard drive can read and write! This applies to your external hard drives as well! Get a fast hard drive Minimum 1000MB/s in order to handle all of your raw photos! Say goodbye to losing productivity while you wait hours for photos to save and export.
4. Versatile Workspace: A sit stand desk has been one of my favorite purchases! Work all day and power through galleries without the aches and cramps from sitting in a chair all day. I don’t know, maybe that’s just me, but standing every once in a while definitely helps me with editing fatigue and burn out. I have purchased 3 of these flexispot desks! One for me, and two as gifts!
5. Don’t be afraid of Artificial Intelligence: AI is everywhere and you are already using it whether you realize it or not. Healing tool in photoshop?! Yep that’s basically AI! There are so many different resources for AI retouching, some are great, some are…. really terrible. Don’t invest without a trial! Save some time and let AI do some of the heavy lifting, but understand that AI can not do everything for you! You will need to make adjustments and add your own touch to your photos.
