Choosing the location for a photoshoot is an important step in creating the perfect images. The right location can help to set the mood and enhance the overall look and feel of your photos. Whether you are shooting a portrait, wedding, or commercial project, it’s important to select a location that will bring out the best in your subject and add to the story of the image.
When selecting a location for your photoshoot, consider the following:
1. Lighting: It’s important to consider the time of day and direction of the light when selecting a location. Will you be shooting outdoors or indoors? Natural light is ideal for most photoshoots, but will your location require you to use reflectors or supplemental lighting equipment to properly light the scene? If you need to, visit your desired location a week before at the same time as your scheduled shoot. This way you can see how the light is. Is your location in full shade or sun?
2. Background: Think about what type of backdrop will best complement your subject and the purpose of the photos. Does the location make sense? I ask my clients if they prefer a modern/professional, classic, rustic, park/greenery, or studio background.
3. Accessibility: Is the location easily accessible? Will you need to bring in any additional equipment or supplies? Will it take a long time to travel to the location? Is there parking nearby?
4. Permission: If you plan on shooting in a public space, make sure that you have approved permission or the proper permits before arriving. There is nothing worse than being turned away on shoot day.
5. Have a backup plan: So many factors can effect your shoot. Weather, construction, or large crowds at popular destinations can cause delays and rescheduled shoots. Being prepared with a plan B in order to stay on track of time.
Take some time to consider all of these factors before selecting a location so that you can ensure that everything goes smoothly on the day of your shoot.
